NIZAMABAD: In an effort to understand and address the long-standing problem of youth migration to the Gulf countries, a pilot survey will soon be launched in Nizamabad district. United Nations (UN) member organizations will conduct the research to identify the root causes of this migration and propose sustainable solutions.
Four villages – Mallaram and Nyavanandi in Sirikonda Mandal, and Dubbaka and Honnajipet in Dharpally Mandal – have been selected for the two-year study. The initiative will focus on factors such as irrigation availability, agricultural potential and prevailing weather conditions. Organizations including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MMPTF) will lead the project.
For decades, drought, limited industrial development and other socio-economic factors have led to large-scale migration of youth from the district and surrounding areas to the Gulf countries in search of employment. Many migrants, hampered by illiteracy, lack of skills or semi-skilled work profiles, face challenging conditions abroad.
The UN recognizes these problems and has decided to conduct the research in vulnerable areas. The study will involve a wide spectrum of participants, including women’s self-help groups, youth clubs, farmers and returnees from Gulf countries. Their inputs are expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the local scenario.
Based on the findings, officials want to implement initiatives that can generate local employment, improve agricultural practices and increase the well-being of Gulf migrant workers. Representatives from Gulf migrant worker welfare associations will work with the research teams to ensure ground-level accuracy.
Since the Congress took over power in Telangana, several welfare measures have been introduced for migrants and Gulf returnees. Prime Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced ex gratia for the families of deceased migrant workers. While these efforts have brought relief to many, families have also urged the BJP-led central government to support migrant workers from Gulf countries, who have contributed significantly to the Indian economy over the past four decades.
